Question# 10 on (mini exam 40,41) 10) A mouse uses ______ energy per kilogram of body weight compared to an elephant, therefore in smaller animals the rate of energy use per cell is _______ than that in larger animals. A)less, more B) less, greater C) less, less D) more, less E) more, greater the correct answer is E. smaller organisms use more energy per kilogram of body weight unlike larger organisms. Hence, smaller organisms use greater energy per individual cell than larger organisms. Reasons being because they have less cells to perform the same metabolic duties a larger organism performs. For example, not all your cells are directly involved in digestion. Right? You have specialized organs (ex stomach, liver, etc) that perform that action. A smaller or single celled organism has just one cell (or a few) that perform all their actions (reproduction, digestion, etc) so the cellular metabolic energy usage and production will be higher than that of a larger organism. Exam review) 27) Ventricular tachycardia (v tach) is a dangerous condition of elevated heart rate, about 200 beats per minute. Which of the following best explains why v tach is such a deathly condition if normal rhythm is not quickly restored? A faster heart beat means diminishing returns in terms of amount of blood supplied to the body. Hence a v tach syndrome is due to a nervous disorder. D) The v tach condition is evidence of cardiac input disorder. A heart with v tach cannot properly fill with blood and paradoxically stops pumping blood. the correct answer is E. Why is A not correct? When the epithelial cells of the skin are damaged during a sporting event by bruises, or something of that nature. It's triggered similar to how the blood clot mechanism works. Usually spontaneous when blood pressure seems to drop around a particular superficial vein/vessel. Hope this helped. T-cells are vital for protection against viral infections, while B cells which are much larger and cannot cross the cell membrane generally fight bacterial infections. 39. osmotic pressure on venous side of capillary beds drops below hydrostatic pressure- C. the pH of the interstitial fluids increase???? B, fluids will tend to accumulate. Osmotic pressure higher than hydrostatic pressure on the venous side is what allows for substances to diffuse across blood plasma into interstitial fluids. Whenever osmotic pressure drops lower than hydrostatic pressure at the venous end of capillary beds, fluids don't diffuse enough across and tends to coagulate blood returning to the heart. Clinically diagnosed as pulmonary thromboembolism. 43. Compared with the interstitial fluid that bathes active muscle cells, blood reaching these cells in arteries has a B. higher PCO2? Before we get into the meat of it all. When we do simple water tests, we usually just focus a few matrices. One of them is the TDS reading. TDS stands for totally dissolved substances. What does a TDS meter report? It measures the combined content of all inorganic and organic substances contained in a liquid (in parts per million, ppm). Could be anything really; agricultural and residential runoff, leaching of soil contamination and point source water pollution discharge from industrial or sewage treatment plants. The most common chemical constituents are calcium, phosphates, nitrates, sodium, potassium and chloride. More exotic, harmful elements of TDS are pesticides arising from surface runoff. Generally, a high TDS levels generally indicate hard water, which can cause scale buildup in pipes, valves, and filters that reduces performance and adds to system maintenance costs. (down side to hard water) The TDS readings we have been picking up in the local areas are way beyond and above that U.S. EPA maximum contamination level of 500ppm. Recently in the Red Oak, TX area I have personally come in contact with families drinking water with a TDS reading of 897ppm. And that should be a boil alert. However, if you consider the fact that pure water only should have a TDS reading between 0-15ppm (our personal standard is 0-5ppm) then it becomes clear that many families are taking in a lot of impurities. And I will invite you to do the same. Whenever you get your water tested, get a TDS reading and whenever you get a water treatment system have another reading done to see how improvement has been done. So with that said, the TDS reading of an average Ozarka bottled water was 26ppm (7 bottles were tested). Some bottles were higher and others were as low as 23ppm. We previously published an article that addressed dangers every consumer should be aware of and of those dangers, we stressed a lot the source of the bottled water and the quality. There are no regulations that require bottled water companies such as Ozarka, Nestle, etc, to report the make up of their bottled water. The 23ppm avg. could imply anything to a consumer. Once again, we've discussed why it is important for the consumer to purify his/her own water from home. Not only is it cheaper, there is greater deal of control and protection.
