IMPORTANT! NEW SI FORUM
So since I do not give out answers to quizzes and exams taken in SI sessions, I get emails and lots of questions about certain
topics covered in SI. Well I am now pleased to announce that our Biology 1441 class now has its own SI Forum. click HERE for SI FORUM A Lefora Free Forum Production |
On this forum, students will have to join the Get More Out of College Forum
Created by Eliel Arrey and will be able to ask questions about specific parts of any test or quiz to their peers. Other students who know the answer or have similar questions can then share responses freely. :) Hope this new addition makes getting answers to questions easier and increases opportunities for learning. Thank you, E. Arrey |
Chapter 2: The Chemical Context of Life

IMPORTANT!!
Firstly I would like to apologize for using an example such as Beryllium Chloride (BeCl2) for question # 5 in the short quiz. I have had many emails over the weekend about the nature of the bond in BeCl2.
Beryllium, Be, is a very unique element unlike the rest in its group such as Mg, Ca, Sr, etc. You would normally expect BeCl2 to be an ionic compound just as MgCl2, CaCl2, or SrCl2 right? And you guys are right to think that way, it is the right train of thought, and correct application of principle required of you as Science students.
Quick facts you are NOT EXPECTED TO KNOW FOR THIS CLASS. This is added just to answer questions I have received over the weekend.
THIS INQUIRY HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE SI FORUM. Click here to get response.
Any more questions, Please do not hesitate to email ME.

Chapter 7: Membrane Structure and Function
I had shared this info with one of your peers and thought it will benefit the rest of the class.
Here are the concepts that you probably want to memorize and master. These are just the high yield CONCEPTS that show up on Dr. Frederick's tests most frequently.
Since most, if not all, concepts in chapter 7 are scientific cell physiological laws, Dr Frederick can only ask you questions in limited amount of ways :)
Thanks & Hope this helps

- Membrane potential and voltage
- Electrogenic pumps (ties in with active transport)
- Osmosis versus Diffusion
- Function of membrane proteins
- Types of cell transport (active, passive, facilitated, cotransport, and bulk transport)
- Intercellular transport such as Endocytosis (pinocytosis and phagocytosis) and Exocytosis.

I got a peculiar and justifiable request, stating that since SI sessions are a little ahead of the class lecture and the last quiz was very tricky, I should post the quiz including the answers. Well request was granted...however I included only the answers to the multiple choice section of this quiz. The essay portion was left blank for you to fill in.
Thank your peers,
:)

Chapter 8: An Introduction to Metabolism
This chapter introduces new concepts but most of it is application of concepts and ideas from chapter 7.
If you have not fully understood chapter 7, chapter 8 maybe a bit more challenging than should be.
New concepts introduced here are Free Energy, Entropy, Enthalpy, Enzymes, Activation Energy, Enzyme inhibition, etc.
Also understanding how the two laws of thermodynamics apply to cellular metabolism is key to understanding energy usage in
any organism's cells.
Here is a questionnaire to test your understanding of Chpt 7 & 8 concepts.
